Astoria by Peter Stark. Astor funds overland and sea explorations to establish and trading post at the mouth of the Columbia River a few years after the Lewis and Clark expedition. “Harrowing” undersells the reality of challenges for all involved. Janae, thanks for this one.
Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents by Lindsay C. Gibson. If you think you need this book, you do. If you don’t think you need it, you might want to rethink that decision. Helpful in better understanding my family of origin and the reality of being a parent.

The Returner from Allison Russell may be all the music I need this month. Variety says she provides, “…a bold and sweet new voice.” Don’t miss it! And don’t miss the NPR piece Allison Russell wants to make waves
Ceremony by Spooky Tooth, released in 1969 as a progressive, experimental rock mass. The story is that band leader Gary Wright hated it and it led to the break-up of the band. I loved it. It was edgy rock fused with a traditional, very traditional mass. Wright died on 9.5.23. May he rest in peace.
Working in Corners Great news if you know of Nanci Griffith and her music, Great introduction if you haven’t yet listened to her. In addition, a new tribute album was released this month.
In the Throes By Buddy and Julie Miller. Every Buddy and Julie album is a gift.
From No Depression: …Buddy and Julie Miller deliver soulful songwriting that arises out an intimacy of two souls sharing pain and hope and love and holding sacred their experience in their warm vocals and music. These two singers and songwriters reveal the depth of their musical and spiritual presence on the album, inviting listeners into its enveloping warmth.

Reservation Dogs Season 3 (the final season) continues the magic. Episode 3 is soberingly beautiful. This is an all time great show! Then Ethan Hawke shows up. And the last one. A perfect soundtrack. Wrapping it all up with community, love, memories, change, family, traditions, stories, life, death, and holiness. Rolling Stone Res Dogs wrap-up
Barbie I loved it and I will wear pink forever (at least in my heart). I had a really cool (in my memory) pink sweater in high school. Wish I still had and that it would fit.
Only Murders in the Building another great show. Season three and Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez continue to shine and surprise. Numerous gests, including Meryl Streep, Matthew Broderick, and Paul Rudd bring fresh energy!
The Morning Show season 3. Another more stars than you can count on a roller coaster ride that can’t be good for my blood pressure. Classic drama in a modern form. The Covid, post-Covid episodes were a reminder I wasn’t ready for.

The Team Nobody Would Play One Year 1955. The story of the Cannon Street All-Stars of 1955, a Little League baseball team nobody would play. Tragic and beautiful.
WTF with Jeff Sharlet Oh friends. This is one to make your skin crawl. Not because it’s a scary story, but because it’s a scary story non-fiction story told by a well versed reporter. Please listen.
The Hidden Roots Diana Butler Bass interviews Robert P. Jones (a.k.a., “Robby”), president of Public Religion Research Institute, author of new book, The Hidden Roots of White Supremacy.
The Other 22 Hours interview with Mary Gauthier on patience in art and persistence in business. Gauthier is my new north star in art and more.
